HISTORY
There is proof that confirms the roman establishment in the town of Malgrat de Mar during the II century a.C, the remains of which demontrate an intense craft activity in the area during this period.
Malgrat de Mar was born between the centuries XIII and XIV as a small hamlet know as "Vilanova de Palafolls" in 1373. When Guillem de Palafolls was interested in the growth of the village, he ordered the "Carta de Poblacion".
Legend says that the name Malgrat came from when the people from Palafolls went to work in Vilanova de Palafolls that they went with "ill will" (mal grat in catalan).
The history of Malgrat de Mar has always been intimately linked with the castle of Palafolls, from where the town originated and the strategic position on the route that comunicates Barcelona and Costa Brava. Traditionaly the town is dedicated to agriculture and to a significant maritime comerce.
Since the XIV century, Malgrat de Mar has been known as a prominent cultural, artistic and social, core. The modernism movement of Malgrat de Mar has also left its mark.
In the XIX century, with the process of industrialisation the area aquired a strong industrial weight centered principalmente in linen.
With the XX century arrived tourism, although it converted into a sector fundamental for the economy, not to the extent of other coastal zones of Cataluña. The tourism is concentrated mainly on the franja litoral, the main atraction being the extense beaches. Near the coast we can also visit the old town (casco antiguo) that groups interesting constructions of the XV and XVI centuries such as the church of Sant Nicolau.
